What’s Up With Netbooks?

by Alberto Domingo

Have you ever heard of a netbook? Some people have, some people haven't. If you haven't heard of netbooks, you are probably wondering what it is.

The answer to your question is rather simple. A netbook is a very thin, super lightweight, and ultra portable laptop computer. The size of the screen is ten inches or less and the processor is a very low powered processor.

Netbooks are a rather good solution for individuals who need a small computer to stay connected when away. Here is what you can expect from the average netbook.

Processors: Most of the netbooks on the market today are running on a processor built by Intel called the Atom chip. Because most of these little laptops are all running on the same processor, you really need to do your homework and see what sets each brand and each model apart from each other.

Battery Size: Most of the netbooks on the market are equipped with a 3 or 4 cell battery. Lately, consumers have been pushing rather hard to get a netbook with a larger size battery. Because of this, we are slowly starting to see netbooks that are being sold with 6 cell batteries preinstalled. The larger batteries do ad some bulk to the system, so if you want the smallest computer possible, I would stick with the smaller battery.

Screen Size: Back in the day, the screens on netbooks were luck to be about 7 inches. Today, about 95% of all netboks have a screen size of up to ten inches. Some of the newer netbooks on the market this year are pushing 12 inches for screens. Some say these are looking and feeling a little too much like a normal laptop computer.

Storage: The average hard drive that you will find in a notebook is about 160GB. Some are a bit smaller and some are a bit larger. They are usually SATA drives that run 5400 RPM.

Keyboard: The first wave of netbooks came with very small, very cramped keyboards. This wasn't intentional, it just happened because of the small size of the device. Today, most netbooks have almost a full size keyboard. They are about 92% the size of a normal keyboard.

Wrap Up: Netbooks are pretty much here to stay! In 2008, netbooks topped Amazon's sale chart and are much better for users that don't want to lug around a heavy laptop. They can handle easy computing tasks like surfing the internet, sending and receiving email, and word processing. So, why would anyone spend close to $1,000 for a laptop computer when you can purchase a netbook for around $400?
