I have had numerous laptops in my lifetime. Many of them are now sitting in my garage waiting to be emptied of any valuable files and trashed or sold for parts on ebay. A couple of them are sitting in my home, being used but really pretty useless. Without proper care and precautions, laptops are quickly rendered inoperative.

Also, don't just put things in your trash folder when you are done with them, empty your trash folder regularly. This will get rid of them for good otherwise; they build up and build up sapping memory.

Memory is also key. This is such an important element to preserving the life of all laptop computers. You can buy a laptop with any amount of memory and they have different levels for different prices. All laptop have the ability to add memory into them as well if you need to. If you use up your memory, the computer slows down and it is impossible to get anything done at some point. So, keep the memory as clean as you can and buy more when you need it. Also, back it up.

You can find programs online that will back up your computer for you. Mozy and Carbonite are two such program that will create online backups for all your files. It take a while for the first backup to run, probably a few hours. But, once you do that, its quick and easy. The programs look at your files regularly and do quick updates at intervals you select.

There is also hardware to store files in order to clear your memory. You can buy a large external hardrive for all the computer's files or get individual disks or a small thumb drive. The only issue here is that they are vulnerable to natural disasters and loss or theft.

You want to download a program that will seek them out and destroy them. You also want a program that will look at what you are using and what you aren't and advice you on how to free up memory in your computer.
