How Computers Have Changed Our Lives

by Adam Huang

Our world is being drastically changed by computers. In just the short time they have been around, they have made an unbelievable impact on corporations and individuals alike. Many of us don't even remember that just a few years ago, the powers that be predicted there would be no real demand for computers. Boy, were they wrong.

These days, not only do most people own computers, we own multiple computers. Many of us now think it is necessary to have a desktop computer, a laptop, a smart phone, and many other little gadgets that have computers in them. We have come from not understanding the need for personal computers for individuals, to not being able to survive without them. Many people go through withdrawals if they don't have them.

Our world has really been turned into a completely different animal than it once was. With basically every person having access to some kind of computer, whether laptop or desktop, connection over the internet is no longer an obstacle to getting things done. We have taken a world divided by borders and boundaries, and we have torn them down with the internet and the ability to get information anywhere.

Desktops have always been a great option, but the problem with them is that they are not mobile. They have all the capability of other computers, and then some, but it can be cumbersome at times to have to sit in the same spot while you are on them. For businesses and personal offices, desktop computers are still probably the favored option because of their power. They also make it easier to install new parts when the old ones are too slow.

It is a different story if someone can't afford to stay in one place while doing business. It is in this situation that laptop computers are necessary. If business requires you to travel and stay in communication the entire time, you need the convenience of a laptop. Additionally, there is now almost no excuse to not be connected to the internet no matter where you go since most major cities have wireless internet all over.

Then as laptops became more common, they started to get smaller until they didn't look like laptops at all. They became small enough to hold in your hand and were known as handheld PDA's. They couldn't compare to the computing power of a desktop, but they have come a really long way since their inception.

Now the trend is to have your phone, PDA, and music player all in one device. The fewer devices, the better, as they say. These smartphones, as they are known, can make calls and connect to the internet all at the same time. They are fast and fun to use, so their popularity has taken off in recent years. The technology outlook indicated that they will continue to soar in popularity.

It is interesting to be able to see these technology advances as they unfold before our eyes. These days, if you do not own the latest gadgets, you are considered behind the curve. But the problem is that no matter how fast you adopt new technologies, there will always be something better coming out in the near future, making your gadgets seem old and obsolete.
