Desktops Are Superior to Laptops in Many Ways

by Greg Black

There are a lot of things to consider when you go shopping for a new computer. Should you get a laptop or a desktop? The fact is that for the same price you'll get a lot more out of a desktop than you will a laptop. If you need portability though, a laptop is the best option. Let's take a look at a few things that make desktops a better investment overall.

Pricing

With laptops and desktop computers having comparable features and computing power, have you ever wondered why portable computers cost more than desktop computers. This fact is mainly caused by the overall higher cost to manufacture portable parts and components. Factors such as weight, the amount of heat they generate, power consumption, and compactness of a portable pc are more important than they are for desktops. These factors add to the overall manufacturing costs.

Usability and Ergonomic Considerations

Have you ever typed for a long period of time on a laptop? They are not the most comfortable things to work on. This is another area where desktops shine. With all of the additional peripherals you can get you can customize the ergonomics of your home setup. Yes, you can attach external keyboards and other peripherals to a laptop, but then you just have one more item to carry around with you.

Desk Space

The idea of a portable computer is to have it be compact. A desktop computer with a flat panel monitor can take up as little space as a portable pc. Even though it's called a "desktop" computer, the tower itself is most commonly kept of the floor, leaving only the keyboard, mouse and monitor on the desk. This footprint is very similar to a portable computer.

Something They Don't Tell You

Notebook and Laptop displays usually have a fixed resolution. You can change and adjust the settings, but your images and text may not look good. People tend to believe that the higher the resolution number, the better the resolution and the better the picture quality is. A higher screen resolution may cause everything to be too small to be comfortable to read and may not be a good solution for you. A laptop screen is smaller (typically range from 12" to 17") than a desktop monitor (typically 19" or bigger). That is a big difference.
