A DIY Guide Of Installing Laptop Memory

by Michael Tan

If you continuously use your laptop, you will find that one day, you will have a full memory stored with the data that you have saved and with the programs you have installed. It could get pretty frustrating especially if you are in dire need of installing a certain program, or saving a big file, but could not because there was not enough memory to do so. Fortunately, there is a way to solve this and it is by upgrading your laptop memory or installing additional memory. By doing so, your laptop's performance will definitely be improved.

While working on your laptop, you may experience reading a notification that says that you may be running low on disc space. This is due to the many new programs that are installed or big files that have been saved, which make your laptop not only run out of space, but it also makes it run very slow. To upgrade your laptop's performance, you will need to upgrade its memory.

Upgrading the memory of your laptop is actually simple but this will also depend on the laptop design. There are laptops where the memory module is easily accessible but there are also those that are hard to access. Before upgrading the existing one it is best to check its current size, so you can calculate how much will be added. You will usually see the size of your memory when you access the BIOS screen in your laptop, the very first screen that will come up when you boot up your computer.

After you determine the amount of additional space needed, you can now head to your nearest electronic shop and buy that additional memory. Laptop memory is abundant in the market today so don't just buy the first one you see. Try to scout for the cheapest one. You can even try stores that sell used laptop memory but beware of its quality because some might not last long since they are already used products.

Installing a new laptop memory is not rocket science; if you know a bit about computers then you're good to go. First thing that you have to do is to check the user manual, the type of memory, and the amount of memory it can accommodate should all be there. Before doing anything else make sure that the laptop is completely shut down and the batteries are out.

The next part will be to locate the compartment where the memory module is placed. Most laptops makers will usually place it at the bottom of the body, but just to make sure you may also consult the user guide of your laptop.

In some laptops you can actually just add a new memory module to upgrade but in many others, you really have to take out the existing one and replace it with the new one. Adding a new module will be easier - all you need to do is to insert the new memory carefully into the empty slot. If you were to replace an existing one you have to take out the old one, which is a bit tricky sometimes, you would usually see a latch that you have to pry out so you can remove the module.

To finish the job, rotate the module until it is flat and until it is locked into place. Once you have made sure that the memory modules are in place and secure, you can now lock up the panel. Installing or upgrading your laptop's memory is now successful and complete.
