In essence, the registry file stores all the configuration settings for your applications, hardware devices and operating system processes. Given the variety of applications users install on their PCs, the potential for the registry having faulty keys is very high. This article details how the tool Reimage has repaired a particularly tricky registry problem on my desktop computer that occurred due to application changes.

At the start of the year I cleared out unused applications on my PC to make some space on the drives. After rebooting the system I witnessed a fatal Windows error that stated the registry file cannot load the hive (a hive is a grouping of registry keys relating to a user that gets backed up to the file system).

Alarming as this initially appeared, it was good to know the issue was purely with the registry so could therefore be repaired. I make back-up copies of the registry regularly so knew it was conceivable to swap in an earlier copy.

The first approach to try is to start the computer in safe-mode (by hitting the F8 key during the system boot) and attempt to swap the problematic registry for a backup copy I made previously.

Unfortunately though, Windows failed to boot in safe mode so I was back to square one.

After some research, I discovered the Reimage online scanning and repair service which provided an optional boot disk when safe-mode doesn't work. The Reimage boot disk got Windows started up in a pseudo safe mode with an operational IE browser. The product runs a scan from within IE (it uses Active X). The scan picked up dozens of issues with the registry file along with out-of-date device drivers.

I ran the Reimage repair stage which cleans up the registry hive by setting keys to values deemed correct based on their own knowledge base of thousands of computer configurations. Happily, Windows rebooted correctly this time and has not exhibited the issue again.

In analyzing the issue it was clear that maintaining registry back-ups is something all Windows users should try to keep. Safely storing the Windows boot disks could have also helped in this situation. On the plus side, it is good to know that, as a last resort, registry repair tools are well able to fix fatal Windows errors like this if needed.

Companies like HP, Sony, Vaio, Dell, and Toshiba all make these computers. However, if you want to support a smaller company, many of them sell these computers as well.

The most important thing to do when buying a computer, no matter if it is netbook, notebook, or desktop is to pay attention to the system specifications. Do you know the RAM of your potential purchase? CPU, video card, number of USB ports, hard drive size, and so on? If you are satisfied with what they have to offer, you will most likely be satisfied with your purchase.

The recession has made many PC owners hold on to their computers longer than they perhaps intended to. Windows XP has enjoyed a prolonged existence as a direct result of this in spite of Windows Vista and Windows 7 being released.

There are many different ways to make your computer faster out there, but once you have that handled there really is a limited amount of things that you can do to increase your productivity. One of these things being to simply make your applications quicker to get to. Think about it just for a second - how much time could you save if you were able to get to your applications quicker?

How much would you save if you were to add it up for a whole week or how about a month? I'm willing to bet that for the average person it would add up to a lot and even if it didn't, being able to get to your programs quicker is just much more convenient. The user interface is something that you use frequently - you might as well spend some time to make it as convenient for you to use.

Let's begine with the quick launch (if you are not sure what the quick launch is, its the group of icons that are right beside your start button). For those of you that don't see a group of small icons right beside your start menu, just right click on the taskbar and select the Properties option. Then just select the "Show Quick Launch" option. Now, in order to do anything you are going to have to unlock the quick launch since it is locked by default. To unlock it, right click on the task bar and select "Lock Taskbar". Now you should see small dotted lines which will allow you to resize it your quick launch. Now all you have to do is to just find the top 3 applications that you frequently use by going through your All Programs list (in the start menu) and then just right click on their icons and select the Copy option. Now go to your desktop, right click and select the Paste option. Now you should see a copy of that icon on your desktop. All you have to do is to just drag it into the quick launch area and the icon should be in bottom right hand corner next to the start menu. So now when start up your computer you don't have to look all over the place for your main programs - there right in front of you now.

Now the next step is to work on your start menu. If you click on your start menu you will notice that there is a faint horizontal line on the left hand side. Everything that is above this line is permanent unless you manually remove them and below this line are programs that you have most recently used. Here is where you are going to add 3-5 programs you use often to the permanent part of the start menu (the top half). Just go to the All Programs on the start menu, right click on the program icon and select "Pin To Start Menu". This will then put it on the permanent part of the start menu so that you can quickly get to them without having to search around your messy desktop.

Another thing that you can do is to spend some time cleaning up your desktop. Only keep icons for programs - everything else, like random files, you should either delete or place into folders so that they are completely organized and in order so when you go looking for them you know exactly where they are.

If you have switched over from XP to Vista you surly will have known by now that Vista is much slower. This lack of speed has to do with Vista dedicating a lot of its resources to trying to "look pretty". Making the operating system look nice is great and all but when it comes time to actually get some work done it can be a huge problem. In this article I'm going to show you two quick ways to make your Vista perform a it faster but you are going to have to be willing to sacrifice some of Vista's looks in order to get more function. Keep in mind that there really is no point in having your computer look really nice since you are the only person that is really going to be seeing it.

If you are using the Home Premium, Enterprise, Business or Ultimate more likely than not you have the Aero effect turned on. This effect is designed to make your computers windows have a glass like effect that looks cool. It also allows you to have Windows Flip 3D which is just a fancy version of the Alt + Tab combination which allows you to cycle through your currently opened programs. If your not sure what the Flip 3D is, just open a few programs, hold down the Windows Button and press the Tab key a few times - that's Windows Flip 3D. Now hold down the Alt key and press the Tab key a few times - that's the old way of cycling through your programs. Here's how to get rid of the Aero effect:

What your going to want to do now is to click Start, click on the Control Panel and then on the left hand side make sure that the Control Panel Home is selected. Now click on Appearance and Personalize, click on the Personalize link, click on the Windows Color and Appearance and at the bottom of the window select "Open classic appearance properties for more color options". A new window should appear and in this window where it has the Color Scheme drop down box just select Windows Vista Basic. Now click Apply and then OK and this should turn off the Aero effect.

Now the next thing that you most likely will not need that Vista has is the sidebar. Unless you actually use the gadgets on the sidebar regularly then I highly suggest that you completely get rid of it. In practical situations it really serves no purpose for the normal person other than making your computers look pretty. Here's how its done:Right click on the windows sidebar icon in the System Tray (the system tray is that little group of icons next to your clock) and select properties. Now when you are in the Windows Sidebar Properties dialog box, just uncheck the box that says "Start Sidebar when Windows Starts" and select Apply and then OK. Now all you have to do is to just right click on the Windows Sidebar Icon in the system tray again and hit Exit.

By doing both of these things you have now given yourself some more resources to use which in the long run will make your computer faster.

Using a computer repair shop to repair a cracked or malfunctioning Toshiba laptop screen is usually quite costly. Luckily, this is an uncomplicated do-it-yourself project that you can do even if you are not technologically advanced. This will save you the price of actually having to ship your laptop off to the repair shop and for the actual repairs. Get a Phillips screwdriver, a knife, a cup plus a replacement Toshiba laptop screen to begin this project.

This entire project takes less than 30 minutes to do. Shut down your laptop and remove the battery. Next, take note of the frame closest to the laptop's monitor. This frame is being held in place with screws. When you look closely, you'll notice that there are screw covers over the screws themselves. With the tip of the knife, pop out the screw covers. Use your Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws. Place the screws plus the screw covers in your cup.

The third step is to get rid of the frame. Basically lift the frame away from the laptop. Next, unplug the inverter cable through the inverter. Access the inverter at the bottom of the screen. The fifth step involves removing the rest of the screws that's holding the screen in its place. You'll need your Phillips screwdriver once again to complete this task. Do not neglect to put the screws in your cup.

Then, slide out the broken laptop display screen. Slide your new replacement laptop display screen into the laptop and plug in the inverter cable. Replace the screws that had been holding the old screen in place.

Get the laptop's frame and set it over the new replacement screen. Tighten the screws with your screwdriver and place the screw covers back over the screws. Next, put your battery back in again and turn on your laptop to see how your new Toshiba laptop screen looks.

Who would have ever thought that your computer operating system would be to blame for your computer running slow? Well guess what - it is. Your computer's operating system is designed to work as flawlessly as possible but unfortunately that isn't the case. What happens is that when you fir get your computer there really isn't anything on it and so if runs smoothly. The problem happens the more that you use it because junk starts to build up all over the computer in many different areas and this makes your computer run inefficiently. This is why people are so attracted to the idea of registry cleaners - they are designed to clean one area of your computer that runs inefficiently, but unfortunately it only cleans "one" area of your computer when there are many other areas that need to be taken care of. This is why after you use a registry cleaner your computer really isn't that much faster.

Your computer uses it's RAM as a temporary working place. When some of these files are in RAM they also need a temporary working place of their own and they will use a folder on your hard drive called the temporary folder (or a Temp folder for short). When window's is done working with these files in your temp folder it deletes them and everything is fine and dandy. The problem arises when you kill a program or when it freezes or hangs. What happens to the files in that folder is that they were never actually removed and after a while of this happening your Temp folder can build up a lot of files that are just slowing your computer down. Here's a simple procedure to remove them:

If you are running Windows XP on your computer just close all the running files and programs and then click on Start, click on Run and then type %Temp% in the little box and then hit the enter key. Now you're going to get another small window that will now show you what is in your Temp folder. All you have to do now is to just delete everything that you possibly can in that folder. If for some odd reason it says that you cannot delete a certain file, just skip it and move onto the next one.

For those of you that are currently using Windows Vista, close all of your running programs and files, click Start in the left hand corner of your screen and type Run in the start menu search box. A small Run window should comes up now. Just type %Temp% and hit enter. Now what you are going to want to do is to delete everything that you see in that folder. If there are some files that you cannot delete that are in that folder, then just ignore them and move onto the next one.

So what are benefits of deleting as many files as you can in the Temp folder? Well for starters, you will have more space on your hard drive. You will also speed up your computer because having these files on your computer can actually cause it to have some internal errors which will obviously slow your computer down.
