The Revolution In Computer Technology

by Kazu Oda

Have you seen the cell phones with a touch screen where you use them completely by touching a screen instead of by pushing buttons? Perhaps you even own one. Have you ever wished you could use your PC in the same fashion? Well, you soon may be able to do just that with the Microsoft Surface.

It is a multi-touch computer that is more like an interactive coffee table than a PC. The Microsoft Surface responds to natural hand gestures and real-world objects, helping people interact with digital content in the simplest way. It has a horizontal surface like a table top, which makes it accessible by multiple users who can work collaboratively and simultaneously.

The Microsoft Surface looks more like a coffee table than a PC. And there is no mouse or keyboard.

How simple! The Microsoft Surface is also able to interact with other objects, such as your cell phone or video camera; making is easier to move information between them. Imagine interacting with your computer in such a fashion.

The Microsoft Surface is able to recognize physical objects from a paintbrush to a cell phone by using cameras underneath its' surface. This allows hands-on, direct control of content such as photos, music, maps, etc.

This device turns into an ordinary tabletop with a dynamic surface that provides interaction with all forms of digital content through completely ordinary gestures, touch, and physical objects.

The Microsoft Surface is truly a revolution in the way we use and think about the PC. No longer is a computer something we keep in an office cubicle or carry around in a bag with the ability to only use by ourselves.

The Microsoft Surface gives us the ability to communicate with the computer and others in person all at the same time, all by using normal human hand movements and gestures.

Does Anyone In America Not Have A Computer At Home?

by Larry Donaldson

In the age of high technology, internet, and cell phones it is hard to imagine not having a computer at home. It seems that it is just as essential as a fridge, stove, microwave and even a bed. Everything is done on the computer in this day and age. Even my children come home from elementary school and have homework assignments on the computer.

So the question really becomes, how in the world did we ever get along without a computer? This is especially true when it comes to business. How a business ever functioned without it is amazing. To do the accounting of a business by hand would be excruciating to a business today. No business of today would ever pay for someone to manually find accounting errors in the books.

It is beyond question that efficiency in business has improved because of the use of computers in the workplace. However, have they lost anything because of computer use? Businesses perhaps have not. The American family, however, may be another story. Many families in America are without an employed person in the home. Are computers to blame? Have hard working Americans lost an ability to provide because of the computer?

When discussing this topic, we should keep in mind that computers have created a number of jobs that did not exist before they were invented. There are a lot of technical jobs relating to keeping computers running, website builders and maintenance, ecommerce jobs, computer manufacturers, etc. that have come about all because of the computer. The computer industry employs a lot of people.

However, we cannot ignore that jobs have been cut because a computer can assist one person in doing a job that used to take 3, 4 or even 10 people. An accountant certainly can do lots more work today by themselves than they use to be able to. Labor jobs have been perhaps the biggest loser as a result of computers and the automated equipment that comes with it.

Though the invention of the computer has brought along with it many jobs that could replace those that it causes to be lost, there is one key component that needs to be looked at. Many of the jobs created by the computer industry are technical in nature. Many of the jobs that the computers cut were not technical, but more labor oriented. This has likely caused a large chasm.

There was a day, long gone, when a high school graduate could provide for his family by making a living as a laborer. By working hard and staying loyal to a company, these kinds of people earned enough. These are the kind of people who are feeling the effects of the computer age.

So, should we toss out all of our computers? Of course we shouldn't. That would be incredibly stupid. The computer is not the issue that needs to be resolved. So what is the answer to bridging this gap for this segment of America? Time will certainly help as the new generation grows up saturated with the technology skills that they will need, but in the meantime we need entrepreneurs who care about people and their families more than money.

Computer Viruses and the Negative Impact on Business

by Amy Nutt

Computers are very detailed machines that function by set rules, codes and languages. Everything follows a pattern and schedule in order to operate efficiently. Computer viruses can affect the cosmetics of a computer such as the screen and display appearances or the simple functions such as the way the keyboard operates or the functionality of the drives. Some of these symptoms may seem to be only a minor inconvenience, but when you see these signs you should wonder what may have caused the change and what else may be going on that you can't see. Other symptoms can include loss of files, decrease in memory space, slow operation and damaged programs.

The writer of the virus determines how they will infect the system as well as what they want the virus to do. In most cases, a virus will perform damage to the host system, and may do this while performing another function such as retrieving information, and then spread to the remainder of the network.

A computer virus is similar to a medical virus in that it often occurs even when precautions were taken to prevent it. Particularly malicious viruses steal information and data, which may be confidential. This may be customer or client information of a personal nature whether medical, financial or some other form. It may be company information specific to employee's records, user names and passwords or other functions of the business. Information may simultaneously be erased. It can pick up information from any other computer in the network. It can locate other users and obtain their information.

There are many programs available and they are a must-have for an individual's personal computer and certainly for that of a business. Strong measures must be taken to prevent viruses within a company, as one infected computer is opening the door to the entire network, putting clients, customers and even employees at risk. Businesses should understand that the condition of their system is susceptible to change with every employee that signs into the network. Training should be instituted to prevent damage by teaching employees how to determine what is safe use of the system, how to update their protection programs and how to know if something is questionable and when to bring it to the attention of the IT department. It is always helpful to set up the virus protection programs to run automatically and the individual systems or the network as a whole can be set to automatically update the programs that are install along with fixes and patches as needed. In addition to anti-virus removal programs a filter may also help to block viruses.

While the anti-virus is placed inside the firewall, a filter is placed on the outside and closer to the server. Users may be limited as far as what can be received and may not be able to open attachments. This will undoubtedly create an inconvenience, though it is in the best interest of the company and will save money by eliminating loss of business if a shutdown is needed to correct a problem. A virus usually spreads very quickly and for a large company this can be costly. Prevention is always the least costly way to reduce the risk of virus.

The Best Laptop For College

by Kathryn L Jones

Do you remember when schools didn't have computers? It really wasn't all that long ago, then slowly computer halls came about which featured one room that had a few computers that we could use in rotation. Then after a while, we saw computers in more classes gradually, usually the computing or math courses got them first. Now laptops are a must from schoolwork to social networking. Here are a few tips for buying a new laptop for school.

Before you spend any money you need to make a list of everything you plan to do on your new machine. If you are only using it to write papers and check your email, then you probably only need the basic model. More intense tasks like doing spreadsheets may need a step up from that, and if you are doing any graphic design, which is very hard on the processor then you probably want a top of the line model.

Another thing you want to consider is the size of the screen. For most people a standard 12 inch display is more than adequate, allowing you enough room to view entire spreadsheets or web pages. If you plan on using the computer for multimedia like watching movies you may want a bigger screen, but remember in most cases the bigger the screen is the heavier your laptop can be as well. Some people prefer a larger screen just due to personal preference, so before you buy a laptop online, be sure to view a similar model in the store to be sure it is what you want.

When looking through the list of features on your new laptop, be sure to think about the little stuff as some features can make a computer more or less comfortable for you over the long term. Things like the size of the keyboard, the type of mouse (trackball or touchpad), or the number of USB ports can really make a difference throughout the life of your machine. Be sure to give some consideration before plunking down your credit card for a new computer.

Lastly, take a look at the warranty that your new laptop comes with. Most companies offer a one year warranty with their product, but be sure what that warranty entails. Some will just cover replacement parts, while others include tech support and repair service. If you are accident prone you could consider an extended warranty offered by either the manufacturer or the store you buy it in, but overall most laptops are reliable and barring an accident an extended warranty is not usually necessary.

Who Are the People That Need Computer Rental

by Amy Nutt

To the average computer user, renting a computer seems a little strange. Why wouldn't you want to own the machine? To the average household, renting a computer does not make much sense, but there are some organizations and individuals who can stand to save a lot of money with this option.

Entrepreneurs

The entrepreneurial among us often find the cost of starting their new enterprises to be the main thing that holds them back. One of the biggest costs associated with starting a new business venture is the cost of technology. Computers are not cheap.

Those interested in starting a new business but lacking the resources to purchase new technology can rent some instead. Once the business is up and running, bringing in income, they can start setting money aside to purchase their own equipment. This ensures that the business starts with excellent, up-to-date equipment, rather than the old computer the entrepreneur has been using at home.

Conference Speakers

Those who frequently travel to speak at conferences and seminars find the hassle of bringing their own computers with them to be too much to deal with. Not only do they have the added time it takes to get through security, but they also have the risk of theft, damage, or loss of their valuable equipment. Sometimes the seminar is best serviced by offering computers to the listeners as well as the presenter. Carting that many computers through an airport is almost impossible.

Computer rental gives these individuals the best solution. They can bring their presentation on CDROM, leaving the computer behind. When they arrive at the conference venue, the computer equipment they need will be waiting for them, set up, and ready to use. All they have to do is stick their disc in and they can start their presentation.

Trade Show Presenters

Those who frequently set up booths at trade shows can also benefit from computer rental. Like the conference presenter, trade show presenters struggle to carry computer equipment on the airplane or bus as they travel. Depending on the type of booth they set up, they may want additional upgrades like huge wide-screen monitors and extra computers for potential customers to use, and transporting these items without damage is almost impossible. A computer rental company can have the necessary equipment ready for the presenter when he arrives at the trade show venue.

Individuals Facing a Transition Time

Are you moving soon? Are you about to end one chapter of your life and start another? If you do not already have a computer, but wish to get one soon, renting during this transition time might be the best option. You will have access to word processing programs to brush up your resume and cover letter, the Internet to look for jobs, and email to keep others in the know about what is going on in your life, but you will not have to fork out hundreds of dollars to purchase a machine. When you are in a more settled position, you can look to buy that computer.

Computer rental is ideal for people who have a temporary need for quality computer equipment, either when traveling, in a transition period, or starting up a new business, but do not have the collateral necessary to buy a new machine. If you are in one of these situations, consider renting a computer.

Computer Virus Removal Basic Tips

by Amy Nutt

The Internet is a very dangerous place. If you aren't careful where you are browsing, it is very easy for your computer get infected with a malicious virus. Sometimes, you have to click on a link or actually install something to get a virus, but in other cases viruses can infect your computer as soon as you browse a website. On top of that, if you regularly download files through peer-to-peer networks, then your chances of getting infected increase exponentially. Here are some tips on how to know when you are infected, and how to virus removal

A viral infection can take a number of different forms and show many different types of symptoms. You might start suddenly getting popup advertisements, even when youre not actually browsing a website. Or you might notice that your computer just seems to be performing very sluggishly. With the most malicious types of viruses, your computer may stop working altogether. But perhaps the most dangerous types are the ones that run subtly and steal your account names, numbers and passwords in order to steal your identity.

For the more subtle types of infections, it can be hard to determine if a virus is really the cause. In other cases, even if your computer shows symptoms of viral infection (such as general slowdown), it may not be viruses that are the cause. Since it can be tough to know for sure if your computer is infected, and it can be catastrophic if you don't detect and remove an infection, the best thing to do is to scan your machine regularly. In order for that to be successful, you must also make sure your virus scanning software is up to date and has the ability to detect the most recent viruses out there.

There are a number of free virus scanning programs out there on the Internet. While most of them are quite thorough, not one program is a catchall, so you may want to run two or three different scanning programs just to be absolutely safe. If you don't already have a virus-scanning program, then you should download one straightaway and install it. Unfortunately, some viruses are very crafty and will actually prevent you from running install programs for virus scanners that can find them. In some cases, you can simply trick the virus program by renaming the installer program for the virus scanner.

Even if you are able to successfully scan and remove viruses, you may find that they come right back the next time you start up your computer. If that happens, then you may have a virus with a root kit component. Root kits basically make it so that as soon as your computer is restarted, the virus is reinstalled. Many basic virus scanners cant get rid of root kits, but there are other free software packages specifically designed to battle root kits that should work.

If you still have problems, then your best bet is to seek out one of the many online forums that specialize in helping people fight viruses. Volunteers on these forums will walk you through step-by-step to help you cleanse your compute of viruses.

What’s Up With Netbooks?

by Alberto Domingo

Have you ever heard of a netbook? Some people have, some people haven't. If you haven't heard of netbooks, you are probably wondering what it is.

The answer to your question is rather simple. A netbook is a very thin, super lightweight, and ultra portable laptop computer. The size of the screen is ten inches or less and the processor is a very low powered processor.

Netbooks are a rather good solution for individuals who need a small computer to stay connected when away. Here is what you can expect from the average netbook.

Processors: Most of the netbooks on the market today are running on a processor built by Intel called the Atom chip. Because most of these little laptops are all running on the same processor, you really need to do your homework and see what sets each brand and each model apart from each other.

Battery Size: Most of the netbooks on the market are equipped with a 3 or 4 cell battery. Lately, consumers have been pushing rather hard to get a netbook with a larger size battery. Because of this, we are slowly starting to see netbooks that are being sold with 6 cell batteries preinstalled. The larger batteries do ad some bulk to the system, so if you want the smallest computer possible, I would stick with the smaller battery.

Screen Size: Back in the day, the screens on netbooks were luck to be about 7 inches. Today, about 95% of all netboks have a screen size of up to ten inches. Some of the newer netbooks on the market this year are pushing 12 inches for screens. Some say these are looking and feeling a little too much like a normal laptop computer.

Storage: The average hard drive that you will find in a notebook is about 160GB. Some are a bit smaller and some are a bit larger. They are usually SATA drives that run 5400 RPM.

Keyboard: The first wave of netbooks came with very small, very cramped keyboards. This wasn't intentional, it just happened because of the small size of the device. Today, most netbooks have almost a full size keyboard. They are about 92% the size of a normal keyboard.

Wrap Up: Netbooks are pretty much here to stay! In 2008, netbooks topped Amazon's sale chart and are much better for users that don't want to lug around a heavy laptop. They can handle easy computing tasks like surfing the internet, sending and receiving email, and word processing. So, why would anyone spend close to $1,000 for a laptop computer when you can purchase a netbook for around $400?
