Laptop Review – From Environmental Standpoint

by Michael Tan

Topics about preserving the environment are so popular these days. Many companies all over the world are now creating measures to be more environment-friendly. One of the good practices to save mother earth is to buy a laptop instead of a desktop PC. A laptop is a compact version of a desktop PC, which means that parts and components are smaller. Making smaller parts will mean less harmful emissions from the manufacturing plants. And in terms of disposal, a laptop will mean lesser waste compared to the desktop PC. Another good thing to note is the fact that many laptop makers today are now complying with environmental standards such as Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment and Restrictions of Hazardous Substances.

An interesting player in the eco-friendly laptop market is the "one Laptop Per Child" project. Their missions is to produce a low cost laptop - the "XO Laptop" - in order to revolutionize the way the world's children are educated. The purpose of the project is to get laptops in the hands of people in third world countries that would not otherwise have access to this technology. But the project is also proving that laptops can be produced for a very low cost - laptops which weigh less than one kilogram and rely on no electricity.

However, there are still some problems that come up when producing eco-friendly laptop computers. In 2009, it is expected that laptop sales will surpass desktop PCs sales for the first time in history. It has been studied that laptops are only kept for an average of three years before being disposed. Therefore, it is important that recyclable laptops are produced. Some other problems that have risen or may possibly rise are listed below along with possible solutions to the problem:

1. Problem: The use of petroleum-filled plastic. Solution: Instead of this material, laptops can be produced with bioplastic-polymers. This type of material is also heat-resistant enough to withstand the heat produced by laptops.

2. Problem: Like any other electronic devices a laptop is dependent on electric power. Solution: Harness the power from the sun. As of today we can already see electronic devices that are powered by solar energy. This will definitely be possible with laptops.

3. Problem: Lead products in the waste. Solution: As mentioned above, the European Union has enacted legal restrictions on lead. President Bush has also followed suit with standards for American lead use.

4. Problem: Spinning hard drives. Solution: Future laptops could reduce their energy use up to 10 percent by replacing hard drives with flash memory, which has no watt-hungry moving parts. Dell debuted a laptop with a 32-gigabyte solid-state drive this year.

Some recent awards winners for laptops that are friendly to the environment include: XO Laptop, Toshiba Portege R500, HP 2710p, Lenovo Thinkpad X300, and the Dell D630.

Important Tips for Rugged Laptop Computers

by William Jobe Cyrus

Rugged laptop computers, also called ruggedized laptops, are made for portability, convenience, and extreme reliability in even the worst of conditions. They're capable of dealing with strong heat and cold, dust, moisture, vibration and other conditions where regular computers might give up.

These computers tend to be designed just for their jobs if they're going to work well. There are models out there that have been adapted from regular consumer laptops, but they don't have the same kind of engineering behind them, and can't be really effective at dealing with harsh conditions. They're also usually more expensive, heavier, and a little behind the current pace of technology, as well as being hard for the ordinary consumer to find.

Rugged laptop computers can be expected to include a number of different design features, though you're unlikely to see all of them on every computer. Some machines are less rugged than other examples, and most brands produce models with varying degrees of ruggedness.

Features that make a laptop computer rugged can include sealed keyboards, LCDs, ports and connectors that keep dust and liquid out, shock mounted storage drives that can cope with sudden drops and constant vibration, and electronics that operate on less power than those found in conventional laptop computers. That maximizes battery life. Wireless communication methods are also extremely common.

Displays on rugged laptops are bright and designed to deal with direct sunlight or dark conditions. Cases and frames include roll cages of magnesium alloy, or are simply made entirely with this alloy, to prevent cracking and other damage. Passive cooling to prevent overheating and components that take heat well are also common in rugged laptop computer construction.

Rugged laptops can be found in all kinds of sectors and situations, from medical emergency staff to police and fire department use. Military personnel make use of rugged laptops, as do utility companies and some companies, such as those in the mining, oil drilling, and construction fields. These laptops go anywhere hard use is expected.

All rugged laptops share the same general goals. They're trying to create a controlled environment where stresses won't reach to damage electronics. However, more durable electronic parts are also common, in order to minimize damage.

There are lots of companies out there offering rugged laptop computers. Among them are General Dynamics, Panasonic, Twinhead and many others. The biggest demand for this kind of computer is from organizations and companies, so the majority of them are sold outside of the usual retail channels.

Rugged or ruggedized laptops are a great choice for organizations or companies that need reliability and performance, no matter what. If you can expect to deal with variable conditions on your job, see if your organization is willing to look into rugged laptop computers. Offering greater reliability and less frequent service needs, these machines are a good choice for anyone who needs things done effectively and efficiently.

Apple MacBook Pro MB990LL Plus Review

by Edward Pfeifer

The specs on the new thirteen inch laptop from Apple, the Apple MacBook Pro MB990LL, includes a 2.26GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo processor and it is upgradeable from the 2GB of DDR3 RAM to 8GB. These features, in addition to the 160GB hard drive storage on the laptop make it one of the most desirable consumer laptops. The glossy, thirteen inch screen displays images and videos using 1280 x 800 resolution. Despite these great specs, there are some who are not fully convinced that it is as good as they claim.

It is hard to find anybody who doesn't admire the uni-body casing of aluminum. Then there are multi-task gestures, Mac OS and overall design that is impressive. The Apple MacBook Pro MB990LL is a beautifully designed laptop. However, this stylish appearance is not enough to convince all consumers. There are those who point out it is possible to get more for less money.

This laptop does have a surface that is glossy and this allows for superior viewing if lighting circumstances are good. Some did find that when lighting conditions were normal there was too much light reflected. The keyboard is normal sized but has no number pad. The battery of this model is not removable.

The Mac OS is superior to the OS on other laptops- that is not a disputed fact. The multi-tasking presentation is what makes the Mac OS preferred. Many consumers are pleased that Apple has made improvements over the first 13" aluminum MacBook they launched. The reduced selling price is another thing that consumers are happy about, reducing the price by an impressive $100.

The battery life on the MacBook Pro is definitely an upgrade. However, a consumer did notice he got six hours from the battery rather than the seven he expected. The MacBook Pro's battery is not easy to take out. The power cord is noticeably short and this means you have to be seated near to an outlet. It is felt the SD card should not stick out as it does.

The disappointed consumers could have been misled with the pre-launch hype of this laptop. Expectations of the MacBook Pro may have been too high to obtain. The difficulty in using the cursor control and the dialog books that were too numerous were complaints that some consumers reported.

If there was one feature that all consumers found to be impressive it was the uni-body enclosure. Multiple parts are used to construct notebooks. However, the MacBook Pro is made of a single part. This is completely unique and considered as groundbreaking. In other words, the uni-body is one piece of aluminum. The manufacturer shapes and works this piece into the uni-body with its incorporated keyboard.

It is an unbelievably thin and lightweight laptop that is easily portable, yet strong and durable enough to use indoors or out. The preloaded software includes Apple Mac's Leopard OS, iTunes, iLife 09, Garageband, iPhoto and iMovie, which many consumers liked and considered a bonus on the Apple MacBook Pro.

Price and Quality – The Secret Behind Dell PCs

by Jordan McPelt

What is it about Dell that sets it apart from its countless competitors? With the ballooning personal computer industry and its soaring demand coupled with new and existing companies quickly capitalizing on this growing need, consumers still flock to Dell for their pcs. By why? It's a secret. Well, perhaps not a real secret -- just one that is known by new and loyal Dell followers. That secret is price and quality. Not much of a real shocker, this we can all concede. But finding that right dependable product at the right price with all the right features -- that's a find. And, that's a secret.

From the company's launch in 1984, Dell quickly set the standard for low prices, and has always been widely accepted for their ability to offer rock-bottom prices. The organization's secret to success lies in its manufacturing processes. Manufacturing and producing their pcs at their own facilities has allowed Dell to keep costs significantly down.

The organization further implemented and perfected its lean production techniques, and these low costs directly translate into low consumer prices. With pc prices currently as low as $299 for their Mini laptops, $499 for their Inspiron models, $649 for their Studio models and $749 for their XPS models, Dell clearly sets the standard. Their prices are low because their costs are low. Period. And the consumer benefits.

However, price shares some room at the top. Its partner is quality. With its previously mentioned perfected manufacturing processes, efficiency (low cost) is only merely a byproduct. Its true goal is quality. And, this is where Dell sets itself apart from the competition. From the most basic PCs used primarily for surfing the web to the most advanced and ultimate gaming laptop available, all are backed by the quality of its components, and all include Intel processing chips. These include Intel Celeron, Pentium, Core 2 Duo and Centrio 2. With all laptops carrying these dependable and well-respected processing cores, this is one of the features that really sets Dell apart.

Dell has its followers. Not only are they highly pleased and vigilantly loyal, but they have a secret. Their secret is that they found the best PCs for price and quality. The competition pales in comparison, and they continually research, develop and implement products and marketing strategies to chip away at this industry leader. They do this because they realize Dell has unlocked this secret. And it is a secret that the organization is highly effective in sharing with its customers.

Business Laptop: A Review of the Adamo by Dell

by John Reagan

Do great things come from slim packages?

The Dells Adamo is said to be better than Apples MacBook Air. Its slender frame with only 0.65 inches, it is believed to be thinner than Macbook Air which has the thickest point at 0.76 inches. We see this as mostly marketing because the Macbook Air has a concave shape that gives it a thinner front and a larger middle while Adamo has a thicker back.

This business laptop has a classy look on the exterior. The embossed logo of Dell and Adamo on the cover located at the center-part between a matte strip placed in a high-gloss, hard glass front and a smooth metal slab on the rear part. This design comes with colors black and white that, even at a first glance, the amazing details of its materials used in the outer shell leaves you nothing but curiosity of whats beneath.

Dells Adamo is housing an attractive LCD display that will make entertainment viewing more enjoyable. With its 13.4-inch 16:9 display with high-definition capabilities, it offers good display. But because of its glossy coating, it shows a little bit of glare. Otherwise, everything else contributes to its sharp images.

The connectivity design of the Adamo is simple as ports and connections are kept at a minimum. There is an integrated 1.3-megapixel camera and integrated digital microphone with a headphone jack. The Input Output functionality includes a Display Port, two USB ports, a USB/eSATA port, an Audio Out with an integrated RJ-45 port or Ethernet Jack. Other internals of the Dell Adamo is the Gigabit LOM, Bluetooth ver2.1 and 3x3 802.11n Li-Polymer cells providing 5 hours of continuous battery life. Its externals include a compact power adapter for wall socket power sourcing.

The Adamo comes in two models with capacities that are best suited for the individuals needs. The more powerful model has uses a 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor to power 4GB DDR3 RAM and its 128GB disk drive. This model would set you back $2,699.00. The less powerful version uses a 1.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor for its 2GB DDR3 RAM and its 64GB disk drive. This version costs at $1,199.00 but the package includes software such as a 64 bit Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack that has the Adobe Acrobat Reader and Flash Player, the Dell Dock, the McAfee Security Center 30 day trial, Dell Webcam Applications, Dell Video Chat, Microsoft Windows Live, Dell Connect Point, Dell Quickset and the Dell Touchpad.

The connectivity design of the Adamo is simple as ports and connections are kept at a minimum. There is an integrated 1.3-megapixel camera and integrated digital microphone with a headphone jack. Other internals of the Dell Adamo is the Gigabit LOM, Bluetooth ver2.1 and 3x3 802.11n Li-Polymer cells providing 5 hours of continuous battery life. Its externals include a compact power adapter for wall socket power sourcing.

The battery life of Adamo while at work is not at its best, though much was expected. In effect, its battery power is way behind the capacity of Apple MacBook and HP Pavilion, lower than almost 40% on average thus making this computer a casual office use rather than a hardworking computing machine.

Despite its downsides, Dell includes a one-year warranty on the package called Adamo Premium Service. And if you are planning to upgrade the warranty into a three-year plan, it will cost you $349 more. But its online driver downloads and a special 800 number to call with a wait time of about 2 minutes, this might be a good enhancement.

In totality, Dells Adamo is an expensive one. Nonetheless, if it suits your mood and meets your demands on looks and exterior designs, this ones a great deal.

With notebooks there is no DVDs or CDs reading or writing, you have a smaller screen and the size is a lot reduced as compared to laptops.

However, they have ultra-portability as a main and undeniable advantage, which is actually the reason why they have been created in the first place. Still, today with all this sweeping technological advance, both expensive and cheap notebooks are created in such a way to share the same features with laptops or desktop computers, thus people tend to the words of laptop and notebook have become interchangeable.

If you want to buy a notebook and would like some advice on how to get one for your own convenience then you can choose from among three major options; you can go for new cheap notebooks, then secondly come second-hand models and finally, refurbished computers could also do.

In general lines people tend to put themselves under pressure when choosing a model of a notebook and realizing it goes beyond their financial capabilities. If you are simply a regular computer user and you are in the section of less cheap notebooks, then you are not in the right part of the store, my friend.

If you need the computer for document processing, Internet research and communications, cheap notebooks work fine, as they don't have to be either multi-leveled or too complex. These basic features should help one stick to the budget, so rethink your choice; a realistic, practical and well informed decision could keep some several hundred dollars in your pocket.

If cheap notebooks are criticized for not having the option to read or write DVDs and other aspects that laptops may present, then remember that these devices have been created in such a manner that they can be upgraded all the time and attached accessories to. Make a good judgment and ponder your needs seriously to make the right device choice.

Consider that there are alternative options to the various limitations of cheap notebooks: thus the heating keyboard can be completed by the help of another regular one and if you long for entertainment, you can simply connect a flat screen to the laptop and enjoy great movies whenever you want. So yes, cheap notebooks can be not only a short term but also a long term solution with a little thinking and research.
