Touch screen technology can be mysterious if you ever stop to wonder what really makes a screen recognize your finger, pen, or stylus. As technology advances, touch screens are becoming more popular because they make the user interface more exciting and intuitive for people new to modern tech gadgetry.

While many newer systems are being developed and used in new products all the time, there are three main systems most commonly used today. The advancement in technology, quality of the results, specific needs of the product as well as cost of the system are all factors in determining the best system for the particular touch screen display.

The first is a resistive system that uses a conductive and resistive metallic sheet to cover a glass panel. The two layers are held apart by spacers with electrical currents running through both layers when the screen is on. There is also a scratch protection layer that covers the metallic layer to keep the screen from being destroyed too easily.

This type of touch screen system works regardless of the medium used to touch the screen. Pressure from the user's fingertips, stylus, or from being dropped all do the same thing and that is forcing the two sheets to touch each other. When this happens, the electrical current changes and the computer calculates where on the screen the touch was made. This is known as the resistive system.

The capacitive system is used in devices that respond only to the human finger, or dedicated stylus and few other objects. This is done by a layer on top of the glass panel that holds an electrical charge. Circuits at the corners of the screen detect where the charge is loss when touched with a conductive object, such as the finger or electrically charged stylus. The coordinates are then fed to the computer which calculated the origin of the charge loss, which is also where the touch occurred.

The third system commonly found is the surface acoustic wave system. In this system the sides are lined with a pair of transducers. A sending transducer sends a signal that bounces off reflectors and is read by the receiving transducer. When something touches the screen, the signal is disrupted and using x y coordinates, the computer can figure out where the touch was made.

When it comes to these three types of touch screen systems, the surface acoustic is the most expensive but also allows for best quality. Without the need for a metallic sheet, it can allow 100% of the screens brightness to shine through. The resistive system, because it requires two sheets, allows only 75% and is the least expensive form of touch screen systems.
