How to Find Used Laptops that Are Cheap

by Adrian Rose

There are many reason why one would want to buy cheap used laptops, the main, and most obvious reason being that a new laptop is simply too expensive. If your goal is to find a cheap used laptop, then take some time to do the research, and you will be sure to get a great deal. I will detail 5 ways you can use to locate the right used laptop that suits your needs, and price range.

One of the first steps in your research should be to get on the Internet and begin your search. Your first stop should be eBay. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few years, you already know that eBay is an auction site where you bid for items. It's also a great place to find hard to find items such as, a piece of toast with a religious icon burned into it, or a clip Elvis's sideburns. But, it's also a great place to find inexpensive used equipment, i.e. laptops.

Once on eBay, you can do a quick search by typing used laptop into the search function. You're sure to find hundreds of selections, and name brands too. Spend some time there conducting your research. You don't have to bid right away so take your time. Compare prices, and look for sellers with good ratings. The higher the rating, the more reputable the seller.

Another place to find used laptops is Amazon.com. Amazon is not only a great bargain store that sells new items"you can also find used items for sale at a great price, often a lot cheaper than their respective new items. If you've used Amazon before, then you've probably seen the links new & used. By clicking on this link when you do a search, you'll be able to see both options. But of course we're interested in used. You'll be given the prices for the used items, as well as its condition, and the rating of the seller.

Still another stop you should make before concluding your research is Craig's List. This website is much like a newspaper classified section in its apparent simplicity. But don't let that simplicity fool you. Do a search for used laptop and you will find a huge selection. You can even choose by location to find something local, or you can opt to expand your search to other regions if you wish. One bad thing about Craig's List is that it doesn't include a seller's rating, so you have to be careful. One way to avoid being scammed this is to stick to buying locally, where you can have potential face-to-face interaction with the seller.

One more place where you can try to find cheap used laptops is Overstock.com. Although this site won't yield as much of a selection as eBay, or Graig's List, and perhaps even fewer than Amazon, it's still a good place to look. You may find something in there you didn't see in any of the other sites, so it won't hurt to look.

You don't have to limit your search to the Internet. You can also try doing a bit of off line research. Look in your local newspaper and see what turns up. Often times, some people will opt to sell their used computers by placing ads in the newspaper, so you may be pleasantly surprised by what you find. Try the Sunday paper since it usually has a larger classified section.

There you have it"5 ways to look for cheap used laptops. By doing some thorough research, you're sure to find a great deal. With all of the selections you'll have at your disposal, you'll be able to find a laptop that has the features you're searching for, at a price range you're comfortable with.

Rugged Computers, Worth the Price?

by Creg Poindarshon

You may be wondering whether or not rugged computers are really worth the extra cost. The answer is yes; if you want to be sure that your computer equipment is going to work wherever you need it and whenever you need it, ruggedized hardware is really the only choice.

In order to qualify as rugged or semi-rugged, there are some tough standards these computers need to meet. They've been carefully designed to be protected against damage of all kinds. Let's take a look at a few of the regular, everyday situations where your computer might run into damage, and how a rugged machine would prevent the problem from occurring.

Drops and falls happen all the time - your notebook might fall from a security table or overhead storage during air travel, take a fall from a car seat or tumble around in a car bonnet, or just fall off the surface of your desk. It doesn't really matter how the drop happens - the outside casing, LCD, and hard drive could all be seriously damaged.

Moving vehicles that don't offer vibration protection could do a number on portable electronics, too. Vibration will make computers eventually develop all sorts of internal problems, including keyboard and hard drive failure - real dangers unless your computer is ruggedized.

Moisture and liquid are well known problems when it comes to electronics, and can ruin them. Rain, spilled drinks and condensation from temperature changes are all problems, and do damage to most parts of a portable computer. Look for rugged machines with moisture seals to prevent this problem.

It might seem like dust is less dangerous than liquid until you take a computer to a construction site, storage location or other area where there's a lot of dust in the air. Particulates can cause serious issues if you're dealing with moving parts. Disc drives and any other moving component may simply quit functioning.

Extreme temperatures will do a number on high quality electronics without proper insulation or heating and cooling mechanisms. If your car is stored or used outside, in an unheated car, or in a building without climate control, the electrical components and battery are going to suffer.

Choosing rugged computers instead of ordinary ones keeps you up and working no matter what kind of conditions you work in, and it helps prevent failure even in ordinary office situations. There are very few environments where humidity and temperature don't change, shock is never a danger, and dust is nonexistent.

Devices that do not use rugged technology have failure rates of around twenty-five percent per year, compared to one and a half percent for rugged devices. The numbers show that using rugged computers is the best way to feel safe and confident that you will be able to get your work done, no matter what.

Electronics Recycling

by A nutt

Society's technological advancements have grown significantly over the years. Electronics devices such as telephones, cell phones, radios, CD and DVD players, televisions, and computers are products that are used in every household. These items are just a few of the many electronic devices that can cause serious environmental damage due to their toxic components. Electronics that are in need of disposal are referred to as e-waste, or electronic waste. Because of the advancement of electronic products, there has been a growing concern about the hazards of electronic waste.

Some of these concerns include: improper disposal of toxic materials, health and safety concerns for people disposing of these items, as well as dangers to the soil and water supply. For instance, electronics are made using a considerable amount of toxic substances such as lead, cadmium, aluminum, zinc, copper, and plastics which can all leak poisonous material in the ground and water. These environmental concerns have resulted in the establishment of electronic recycling facilities and industries who take old electronics such as computers for the purpose of recycling and safe disposal.

Electronics containing materials such as metals, plastic, are valuable to the recycling companies. Disposing of electronics through a recycling company will result in fewer electronic devices going into landfills and lower carbon emissions. Recovering Raw Materials: Recycling electronics involves recovering raw materials from the electronic equipment. Materials such as steel, copper, wires, aluminum, brass, plastics, glass, etc., are extracted and sold to smelters so they can create raw materials. Depending on the type of metal being extracted, they can be processed and used in products required by such businesses as the steel, construction and cement industry. Plastics and wood can be used as fuel to provide heat to industrial furnaces which converts to steam. Metals such as copper are sold to metal refineries.

Plastics: Plastics from such items as computers, computer mice, and keyboards, are sent through shredding processes and machine sorted. They are then sent to other recyclers for further processing. Larger Electronics: Items such as televisions and computer monitors are dismantled by hand. The leaded glass cathode ray tubes are removed and disposed of safely. Plastics, copper, and circuit boards are removed, separated, and processed.

Hazardous Items: Toxic items are removed from electronic devices and disposed of safely. Toxic substance can include leaded glass, rechargeable batteries, non-rechargeable batteries (i.e.alkaline, lead acid, cell batteries) mercury in lamps and switches, parts containing polychlorinated biphenyls, as well as ink and toner cartridges. The remaining non toxic materials are processed and the recyclable materials are recovered. The materials are shredded and separated according to type. For instance, they can be divided into such materials as steel, copper, aluminum, and plastic.

Refurbished Electronics: There are now many companies that acquire used computers, repair and update them, and resell them at a much lower price. This is a great way to keep electronics out of landfills and make technology more affordable also laptop repair. Donate Your Computer: If you are getting rid of your old computer because of a recent upgrade, consider donating it to charity. Many schools and non profit organisations are in need of computers. There are companies and businesses that will take your computer, refurbish it, and donate it to a needy cause. Make sure your computer is wiped clean of all information before donating it. Donating your computer helps the community and the environment.

We are fast becoming a technology dependent society. When it comes to protecting and conserving our environment, we have to adapt and change our technological practices to ensure a sustainable future. Recycling electronics is a great way help the planet.

Save Money by Purchasing Refurbished Equipment

by Amy Nutt

Most equipment will decrease in value over time. Many businesses and individuals are now looking for ways to save money when they buy equipment. The best way to save money is to buy refurbished items.

Used equipment is often serviced and then sold as a refurbished item. A company will retest the product, repair any damage or defect, have it inspected, and then repack it in new packaging. Once the original factory seal is broken, a manufacturer is mandated by law to sell the product as a refurbished item. Equipment is also refurbished when a customer returns an item to a store. There are a number of reasons why customers will return a product. They ordered the product and the wrong product may have been delivered. They may have taken the product home and then decided they did not want it. If they ordered a product online that was to be shipped, they may have went to a store and bought the same product before it arrived. They may not like the item. They also may have difficulty operating the product. No matter what the reason, all returned products are inspected, and if damaged or contain defects, are then repaired. The items are resold as a refurbished product.

The benefits of purchasing refurbished equipment include:

1. Refurbished equipment is sold at a much lower price. Customers can find themselves saving an average of 25 percent to 50 percent of the retail price for the same equipment that is new.

2. Buying refurbished equipment will help protect and conserve the environment. When you buy refurbished items, less waste is going into landfills. This means less land will be cleared for new landfills.

3. Refurbished products may come with a return policy or warranty. It is usually for a shorter period. You have to check with the business because not all manufacturers offer warranties. Warranties should last at least one year, although 90 days is often suitable for equipment without many moving parts.

4. If a business needs to implement cost saving programs because profits have decreased, buying refurbished equipment will provide the much needed savings. . If a company has a specific equipment model that is no longer being sold, buying refurbished equipment and parts is a great way to continue to use their current model without having to go out and buy brand new equipment

5. Because of new and innovative technology, items such as computers are constantly evolving. Purchasing refurbished computers that have been upgraded for current software and hardware is a great way to save money.

6. The refurbished industry is predominantly involved in telecommunication, office, and industry equipment. This is because the equipment tends to be quite expensive. Businesses can get great deals on refurbished equipment from these particular areas.

7. Locations where equipment receives a lot of damage such as scratches and dents are good candidates for refurbishment equipment. For instance, office furniture, storage equipment such as shelves and cabinets for garages and work rooms, are suitable for refurbished items.

8. Buying refurbished equipment for parts can decrease the costs of parts for existing equipment. This is a popular choice for garage mechanics.

If you are thinking about purchasing refurbished equipment, ask the business how they define the word "refurbished." Also ask if the equipment has been taken apart and had any parts replaced due to damage. Make sure the equipment has been tested and ask about what technical support is available to you from the manufacturer and from the dealer.

Not only does refurbished equipment save money, it is also a cost efficient way of managing a business.

How To Reboot PC Computers Now

by JD Chang

Does your PC computer need to be rebooted? The science of proper computer reboot is not that easy - you don't just press the power button to turn off your laptop.

To reboot your computer the correct way - and to avoid serious OS errors and registry problems that could cause longer-term problems, read this article. I'll provide 5 steps to properly rebooting any PC or Mac computer without damages to the OS.

Sometimes even a computer running slowly needs a good reboot to speed it up!

Step 1. Close and retain programs

If your computer isn't completely frozen, make sure to close and save all programs and data. When computers reboot, they automatically dump and delete short-term memory. This means that any Adobe Photoshop file that you were working on will be erased unless you manually SAVE IT.

Step 2. Make sure there are no running processes

If there are running scripts like a hard drive defragment or system restore, these actions could be terminated and cause major damage to both the software installed itself as well as any files associated.

Step 3. Do a "soft reboot" through the Start Menu

I'm talking only to Windows OS users now, but the same general logic applies to Apple Macbook users too. Find the Shutdown options, and click "Restart".

Step 4. If that doesn't fix it, do a hard PC computer reboot

This is when all else fails and a soft reboot "Restart" isn't working. Find your power button, and hold it down. Do not let go! That's important - hold it down until your entire processor shuts off (usually in 5 seconds).

Your PC computer has been made to power down - what's known as a hard reboot. This can cause major data loss and in the wrong circumstances, corrupt applications and operating system files.

Step 5. Once your PC laptop computer has rebooted

Do a check of major programs that load on rebooting. These are the first to get messy during rebooting procedures. Remember, proper rebooting eliminates the need to buy cheap computer repair parts!

Troubleshooting Computer Problems In 5 Easy Steps

by JD Chang

Troubleshooting common computer problems is a huge pain in the butt. I know exactly how you feel.

In this article, I'll discuss 5 easy steps to troubleshoot most PC computer problems, from software to hardware, from Windows to Macs.

Step 1. Determine if it's a software or hardware problem

Usually it's a silly performance issue - either a PC computer running slowly, or your monitor is flickering, or the internet has no connection.

Computer performance issues are 85% of the time caused by software - and 85% of the time it's a Windows OS computer because they just fuck up a lot.

Macs are built cleaner and lighter - with less trojans and viruses. You have fewer concerns and fewer bad guys trying to beat the crap out of it.

Step 2. If it's a software problem, uninstall the bad program

How do you find the bad program? Whatever application loads and causes your computer to fail, or is running when your PC is extremely slow is probably the culprit.

You can also run an Antivirus program or Resource management program to determine which software applications are hogging the most resources or behaving erratically.

Then, remove the offending software program. Install the latest version, making sure you download patches for any driver updates.

Reboot the offending computer - this should solve it.

Step 3. If it's a hardware issue, isolate the equipment and get a replacement

Let's say it's your CD drive. Your rewritable CD drive isn't burning CDs, doesn't read a DVD, or simply keeps whirring for no reason.

There are only 2 possible solutions - replace the drive yourself, or find a local computer repair store (unless you're still under warranty, have a ton of patience, and want to test manufacturer computer support).

Step 4. Clean your computer thoroughly

This means both the software and hardware. Use a pressured wind spigot can to clear dust from your keyboard, monitor, mouse, wire ports, and speakers. Keeping small particles out of your hardware parts clean while prolong their useful life.

Then, do a software cleaning. Defrag your hardware harddrive. Install new updates to OS components and key components like AVG Anti-virus.

In addition, remove programs that you only "use rarely". Delete files and mp4s and docs that you don't want to keep. Use something like CCleaner to repair the registry and key drivers and remove DLL files.

Step 5. Turn your computer off and let it rest

Don't reboot your computer - that's key. Turn it off, unplug the power cable, and let it rest for a day. Often hardware is simply exhausted and needs to cool down for a short period to let key hardware parts run easily once again.

That finishes our examination of computer troubleshooting tips!

All About Pink Laptops

by Michael Tan

Pink is a soft and famine color. It is one of the favorite colors for women. Everything in pink is usually easier to catch women's attention. That's why many laptop manufacturing companies, such as Sony, Dell, and Asus are shading their laptops in pink to attract more female buyers. And this has proven to be effective. Compare to the old days when laptops are only available in the dull gray and black colors, women today are much luckier to have the chance to choose the laptop color that they like -- pink.

Will choosing a pink laptop force you to give up on performance? Definitely not. Laptop manufacturing companies have capitalized on the sentimental value that women attach to pink color, but they are also well aware that their customers are looking for top performance besides good look. So it's really easy to find a fabulous pink laptop with great features and high performance these days. So it's not surprising to see pink laptops gaining popularity among women. To them, pink laptops are not just a useful gadget, but also a fashion statement.

Dell is a brand that you can always count on when you are looking for pink color laptops with good features and performance. Almost all laptop models from Dell, ranging from the budget laptops (Inspiron) to the high-end product line (XPS), are available in pink. All of them get great review rating from the pros and are equally stylish. Dell's popular pink laptops consist of the XPS line, Studio line, Inspiron line, and the newly launched E-class Latitude. Each of these product lines are designed specially to fulfill different requirements from customers. If lightness, portability, and high-end performance are important for you, the XPS line delivers exactly what you need; and if cost is your main concern, the Inspiron line offers a starting price of as low as $499, and still delivers descent performance. The Studio line is a moderate range laptop which sits between the Inspiron and XPS, while the E-class Latitude is a business laptop that's designed for professionals.

Sony is another brand that offer a few variety of pink color options for their VAIO laptop: the CR Series in Glossy Cosmopolitan Pink, the SR Series in Glossy or Sunset Pink, the TZ Series in Luxurious Rose Pink, the VGN-C290 CTO Series in Blush Pink, and the NR Series in Textured Cherry Blossom Pink. Compared to Dell, the Sony VAIO laptops tend to be pricier, but they also come with really stylish design, high portability and performance. Also, it's worth mentioning that if you order a VAIO laptop from Sony's official website, you can personalize the laptop by adding engraving to the laptop, free of charge!

Besides Dell and Sony which are the 2 most famous laptop brands that produce good-looking and great performing pink laptops, there are some companies that release limited edition of pink laptops on special events, such as Valentine's day and Breast Cancer Awareness month. To give a few examples, the pink Prada laptop from ASUS, the Pink Gold LifeBook P8010 from Fujitsu, and the pink Portege M800 Dual Core from Toshiba are all the limited edition laptops. Having a limited edition pink laptop is cool because you can show it off to your friends. But since these companies only produce limited edition pink laptops once in a while, and only for limited units, it's not easy to get them. You got to act fast whenever a new limited edition pink laptop is released.

Besides pink laptop, pink netbook is another great gadget for women too. It is a new category of tiny, light-weight, low-cost, and lean function sub-notebook that is optimized for Internet access and light-weight processing. Netbook is gaining popularity quickly after Asus Eee PC, the first netbook hits the market on 2007. Due to the small size and light weight of netbook, it has become a new favorite gadget for women. And due to this trend, netbook manufacturing companies always make pink as an available color option. Samsung NC10, Acre Aspire One, MSI Wind, and Dell Inspiron Mini are the few netbook that comes in shiny pink and with great performance. If word processing, web surfing, and other light-weight processing are the main usage for your laptop, consider getting a pink netbook instead of a full-size pink laptop.

Although pink laptops are so popular now, there are still some laptop brands that are not available in pink. But no worries, there are companies that will customize the color for you. Colorware, Inc. for example offers customized color on laptops and a variety of other devices. You can buy your laptop directly from them or send in one you already own for customization. Alternatively, another company called Gen-X-PC will match any PMS (Pantone) or Hex color and you get a choice of 4 different finishes " solid, metallic, pearl or color shift. For a less expensive way, you could just apply pink laptop skin on your machine. Many laptop skins with really cool design and low price can easily change the look of laptop to be more attractive.

A pink laptop is not only a useful gadget, but also a fashion statement for women. That's why it consistently outsell their counterparts. I believe that pink laptop is going to keep gaining popularity, and thus we will have no shortage of pink laptops to choose from in the coming years!

The Laptop I Need

by Adrian Paul

Working from home day after day and night after night on a borrowed laptop is no fun. Especially when it is borrowed back off you. So, for that reason, I feel the time has come for a laptop of my own. Or do I want a desktop? A PC or Apple Mac? Or maybe one of those little palm-held jobs would look the part; after all, it would fit neatly in my handbag.

After much consideration and deliberation, I go full circle and end up back at the laptop. But where do I start? What are my requirements? Well, my business is a small one, so I don't really require anything top of the range. Yet! I'll use it mainly for article writing and up-dating my website. Oh! And maybe a spot of shopping! And I will be the only one using it. Probably!

So I have a look on the internet to find out what other people are buying. And what manufacturers are selling. Suddenly the English language becomes muffled jargon. Do I really know what I want?

What memory is required? My husband, a programmer, insists 2GB is what is called for. Added to that is the essential 2.0TB of storage! Whatever all that means! I'm not so sure! I fear he may have his own reasons for these specifications...

Dell is mentioned; so I go online for a browse. Having found one within budget that appeals and appears to tick all the boxes, I am suddenly confronted with an array of extras - all of which serve to push up the price.

So I pull the reigns in. Perhaps I don't really need a lap-top of my own. Maybe my husband's will suffice after all. Neither a borrower nor a lender be - well so much for Shakespeare - it seems to work for us...
