Basic Guide To Maintain Your Laptop

by Michael Tan

Laptops, regardless of the reason you buy them, are very important, not only because of their monetary value but because of the data that is stored on them. Furthermore, if your laptop stops functioning properly, then the time it spends in the repair shop will be time that you can't spend doing your work, studying or whatever it was you used the laptop for.

If you want to keep your laptop in a good shape for many years, here are some tips that you might want to consider.

1. Vent Cleaning: The vents on your laptop need to be looked at every week to make sure there is nothing blocking them or impeding their performance. You can buy a can of air at a local store and use this to clean them out, as it is best not to poke anything in them.

2.Fan Functioning: If the fan of your laptop malfunctions, your laptop can end up overheating. Thus, you have to make sure that the fan is properly functioning. You can check the website of the brand of your laptop and search for a software that can help you identify whether your fan is working properly or not.

3. Surface: Try and use a hard surface to keep your laptop on, and avoid both your lap and pillows as this will reduce the airflow to the fans and vents, causing the laptop to heat up.

4. Storage: To protect your laptop from dust, spills, and bumps buy a good quality laptop bag and not just a sleeve. In buying a laptop bag make sure that the laptop compartment is properly padded, pads should be on both sides. Before putting the laptop into a bag make sure it is completely off to avoid overheating.

5. Liquids: Keep all liquids away from your laptop at all times. If you are in the habit of drinking water while working, make sure the bottle is covered at all times. If possible keep the water bottle on a different table to avoid mishaps.

6. Shocks: Make sure the laptop is well protected when you move it around, and always move it gently to avoid jarring it and breaking something.

7. Humidity: Protect your laptop from humidity at all times. It can cause damage to the motherboard and the screen. Don't use your laptop when at the beach, or outside when the weather is humid.

8. Dust: Keep your laptop from dust at all times. Do not place it near the windows and always keep it in your storage bag when youre not using it. Clean the screen and keyboard once a week using a soft cloth to avoid building up of dust.

9. Floor: Avoid putting the laptop in the floor there is a big chance that somebody might step on it and damage it.

10. Surge Protectors - Utilize a surge protector at all times when youre charging your laptop to protect the battery.

With these tips you can now have the best performance in your laptop.

High Price and Low Performance: The Sony VAIO VGN-P530H

by Ambrose Kurz

With the Sony VAIO VGN-P530H (the "Sony P"), Sony continues its long and oddly proud tradition of making overpriced, underpowered, completely useless netbooks. The netbook audience has always been a tiny niche market, mainly targeting people for whom a laptop is too big and a PDA is too small. Given the Sony P's poor design and limited functionality, it measures up poorly against its competitors (especially since it is more expensive) and is destined to end its shelf life in the bargain bin.

The first look we get at the system specifications tells us where the biggest programs are. It operates on two GB of RAM, which are not upgradeable, sixty GB of hard drive space, and 1.33 Gh of processing power. It also runs Windows Vista, an operating system known for its resource consumption. Operating this OS on this computer will have disastrous results. This is the first of the design problems, and there are lots more.

We should remember to mention the strong points of this computer before tearing into it. The Sony P is portable and convenient, less than ten inches long, five wide, and only one thick. That's pretty small, but it remains comfortable for typing, and weighs just one and a half pounds. It might not be quite as small as the commercials imply (we can't fit one in our hip pockets), it does fit well in a briefcase, purse or satchel, and the looks are nice. However, under that shiny skin is a host of problems.

The single biggest complaint customers have with the Sony P is that it is simply not powerful enough to run Windows Vista. Microsoft's minimum system requirements for running Windows Vista is a 1 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM-although if you want Vista to run any faster than a turtle with arthritis, you need at least 2 GB of RAM. In other words, the Sony P has barely enough power to simply run its operating system. If you try to run any other program on top of that (such as word processing), it system slows down incredibly.

The obvious solution would simply be to uninstall Vista and install Windows XP or Windows 7 instead. Unfortunately, this is difficult, if not impossible. To begin with, the Sony P has no CD-ROM drive, making installing XP tricky at best. Worse, the Sony P uses a new video card (the Intel GMA 500 chipset) for which there is no Windows XP driver available. One can try installing Windows 7 instead, for which there is a GMA 500 video card driver available.

Unfortunately, the next problem is that much of the Sony P's features, such as its wireless internet software, which can use Ethernet, wireless 802.11b/g/n, and Verizon's 3G Mobile Broadband (for an extra $45 per month), requires special Sony software. Unfortunately, much of this specialized software only runs on Windows Vista. In other words, if you switch to Windows 7 or XP, you lose much of the Sony P's functionality. Even if you keep Vista, the operating system and all the Sony bloatware takes up 20 GB of the already small 60 GB hard drive.

Another problem with the Sony P's video card is that it has no dedicated memory for video. Instead, up to 760 MB of system memory is allocated to the video card. Unfortunately, as we already mentioned, the Sony P already needs all of its available memory to run the operating system at a decent speed. The result is that many users of the Sony P report frustrating skipping, slow-downs, and flickers when trying to watch DVDs-and watching streaming video, such as YouTube, is all but impossible.

The Sony P just isn't meant to be a primary computer. As a secondary one, portability has been made most important, making this the appropriate netbook for someone who wants a computer to do extremely simple jobs. Inventory or notetaking are going to be this computer's best tasks. If you want to purchase a netbook for any other purpose, you're best advised to look elsewhere for more power and lower cost.

Buying Notebooks Under $500

by John Roth

Buying cheap notebooks does not necessarily mean the notebook is not a great laptop; it simply means that a well built notebook created by a major manufacture is selling for less than 500 dollars.

Basically the notebook was still under warranty and was sent back to the manufacture. Then the computer is re-tested by a quality control team by the manufacture to make sure the hardware and software works perfectly before it was shipped out again.

Refurbished notebooks can sell for 25% to 50% lower than when the computer was originally shipped out. A great bargain! And these notebooks work very well.

In addition, larger and more complex operating systems are being created, needing more hard drive space, faster processors, and more RAM"thus the price of the majority of the laptops sold in the world escalates upward.

Refurbished notebooks can break just like a standard notebook from the same manufacture, but at least youre getting the computer at a 25% to 50% discount. Its like buying a foreclosed home at steep discount (nearly brand new).

I personally buy two notebooks every time I need a new laptop. If my main computer breaks or gets hit by a virus (heaven forbid); I can reach for my backup and quickly be re-group without much time delay. And buying cheap computers is an easy and affordable method to accomplish.

Buying cheap notebooks is the best method to accomplish what I do most; which is emailing, internet searches, and writing in Word. You do not need to buy an expensive computer just to accomplish those tasks.

You can buy notebooks for less than 500 dollars from major manufacturers such as: IBM, Dell, HP, Compaq, etc. You do not need to worry about whether these computers will work; these notebooks are tested before they leave the factory (just like any other laptop).

Think smart, you do not need the most expensive notebooks to accomplish simple tasks.

Sincerely, John Roth Note Books Under 500 Inc.

Guides to Keep Your Laptop in Best Condition

by Michael Tan

A laptop computer is not cheap. So if you own a laptop, you should do everything you can to keep it in the best condition.

Aside from cleaning your screen and dusting the keyboard, however, you'll need to take a few extra steps to maintain your laptop's health:

1. Play it cool - A laptop computer generates a lot of heat, especially when running the latest high-powered software. Too much heat and you risk damaging the internal circuitry. Always try to keep your laptop in a well-ventilated, cool environment. And ensure you don't block the fan grills on the sides, back, or bottom of the machine at any time.

2. Handle the screen carefully - Avoid touching or playing with your LCD screen. Yes, it might be fun to watch the waves generated by your finger against the screen, but LCD displays are fragile devices that must be cared for. Take care when cleaning the screen too, and use only approved cleaning materials. You won't want to pay the money for screen repairs or, even worse - a new machine entirely.

3. Don't drop it - Whatever you do, don't drop your laptop computer! Keep it safe inside of a carrying case when moving around or traveling. Don't leave it on the edge of a table or on an unstable support of some kind. One ill fated drop to the floor could spell death for your mobile office. Try to make sure the rubber feet underneath are in good condition and are still attached. This will prevent the device from sliding around accidentally.

4. Don't spill your drinks on it - Many people have the habit of eating or drinking while working on their laptops. Unless your laptop is water-proof, you want to be extra careful when having drinks near your laptop. A few drops of liquid on the right spot of the laptop will easily kill the machine. It's especially important to keep your drinks away from the touchpad and keyboard.

5. Just say no to viruses - Security wise, make sure you obtain an anti-virus program. Secondly, keep it updated! Buying an anti-virus one month and not updating it for the next six really negates it purpose. Your laptop computer could be exposed to hundreds and thousands of new viruses every month if you don't update your virus definitions. Most anti-virus programs have automatic update methods, eliminating the need for you to have to remember to do it manually.

These are the few basic guidelines that will ensure your laptop to be in good health. Every laptop owners should follow these guidelines if they wish to keep a longer lifespan for their laptops!

Download RegistrySmart-Something You Wont Regret

by Todd J Martin

Do I really even want to download RegistrySmart? That was the question I asked myself. I get tired of downloading software utility packages. It seems like you spend a lot of time, money, and effort for nothing. But the time had come I had to do something.

My computer was quickly turning into just a paper weight sitting on my desk. Downloading was an all night adventure. The fact was that I did wait too long but now it was time to do something about it.

I had to do something " but was the answer to download RegistrySmart? I asked our IT guy at work if he knew of anyone else having the same problem. He told me it was a really common problem. I asked him what caused it. He said it all goes back to the registry on the computer.

He told me that all computers running Windows have a registry " a sort of repository for all the options and settings for the individual computer. It also has all the preferences, settings, and information for the different hardware and software on your computer. The problem is as software is deleted and hardware is removed, not all the information gets deleted. As a result your computer is frantically searching for something that no longer exists.

My friends made things much easier to understand. They also made it quite clear as to why I needed to download RegistrySmart. It would go to my computer and clean up all the little bits and pieces of information that was left behind. In turn the computer would be able to work much easier because it wouldnt be looking for the phantom software.

I wondered if I could possibly fix things up without having to download RegistrySmart. My friends knew it was possible but they said I would have to go through thousands of files and chances are I would still miss some. Then they said something to me that really hit home. They told me to stop being so cheap and reminded me what a new computer would cost. That was a very valid point and I knew it was time to do the right thing.

Well, it turned out to be a no brainer. I had to download RegistrySmart. So I headed over to their website to take a look. I was very pleased to find out I could run a scan for free and see the errors that needed to be fixed. At that point I could make the decision. Again it was a no brainer because of the money back guarantee they offered. I had absolutely nothing to lose.

Dell Laptops vs Acer Laptops

by Sunny Emmerwitz

Today, Dell laptops are the most popular laptops on the market according to sales in North America. Acer laptops are starting to emerge and gain more momentum and have taken a large portion of the laptop market. Both computer manufacturers have a huge variety of models that can fit into just about anyones budget.

Dell, when compared to Acer has a much bigger and stronger reputation and has been in business for a much longer period of time. Acer is trying to target the budget minded buyers that are in need of a personal portable computer, but cant afford the big name brands such as Dell or Apple.

As stated before, Dell has a wide variety of models that fit just about any budget and about any need. Dell laptops range from about $500 to about $2,000. Recently, Acer has expanded their line of laptops into the high end markets. These laptops have Intel Duo Core processors and huge screens which make them more desirable by the end consumer.

So, the million dollar question still remains When choosing a laptop, should you choose a Dell laptop or Acer laptop? One of the best features that Dell has is the ability to customize and create your own laptop with the components that you want. When purchasing a Dell computer, you are asked to choose the exact components that you want installed on your machine. With Acer, you have no choice as to what components you will be receiving on your computer.

So based on the cold hard facts, you can make your choice. You can buy a dell laptop and pick every feature that you want, or you can pick an Acer and end up with a factory built laptop with no upgrades or custom component installation. Yes, it might save you just a little bit of money but, you wont end up with a true custom machine built to your exact specifications.

So there you have it. Both Dell and Acer laptops are built to take care of just about every need in the market. In my own opinion, Dell is the better choice for someone who needs a laptop computer because of their solid reputation and the ability to customize your computer exactly how you want it. You wont be disappointed because the computer was built by you and you will know exactly what to expect right out of the box.

RegistrySmart Review ” Are The Review Sites Honest?

by Todd Martin

It was time to look for a RegistrySmart Review. I knew if I didnt do something soon my computer would just turn into a paper weight. Already it was running very slow and always freezing when I was surfing the internet.

After talking with an IT guy, I found out that the problem was that the registry needed to be cleaned. He told me that all Windows computers have a registry: a depository for all the information on the setting, preferences, etc. for both the software and the hardware on my computer. The problem is that as software is deleted and hardware is replaced, not all of this information gets cleared out of the registry. As a result, the computer looks for this obsolete information which slows the overall operation of the computer.

It was time to look for a RegistrySmart Review. That was the program recommended to me. I was looking for a review not because of a trust issue but I like to do my own research before I use anything. There are a ton of scams out there and I needed to be sure I wasnt getting in any deeper than I already was with my computer. There was no way I was taking that chance.

Im glad I decided to do my own research. I couldnt believe how many registry cleaners were available online. The prices varied from almost nothing to not affordable. I saw many flashy websites that looked great until I checked the reviews and found out on some that not only were the products not very good but in some cases they were even harmful to your computer.

While looking at different RegistrySmart Reviews, I noticed something that rather bothered me: it never seemed to be listed first. Or even second. It was listed third on the review site or lower. I couldn't quite figure it out. I trusted my IT guy and he recommended RegistrySmart by name. Why wasn't it ranked any higher?

It was time to dig a bit deeper and try and figure out what was going on. I obviously found more review sites but also noticed a trend. It seemed the more money for the program the higher it was reviewed. At least that was true for the top 3 or 4 programs. I came to the conclusion that the owner of the review site was likely making commissions so of course he would list the higher commissioned ones first. Im not positive but Im sure one thing does have something to do with the other.

I couldnt wait any longer so I made the decision to go with the recommended product and I am happy I did. Eventually I did find a RegistrySmart Review that confirmed mt suspicions. The nice thing is that it works very well, its easy to use and its very affordable. Another neat factor is the iron clad money back guarantee and the free customer support. This is definately a win-win situation.

All About Notebook, Laptop Computers

by Rick Rickmiles

This is not the case any longer. As notebook-laptop computers become more and more streamlined, they are fast catching up to the affordability and convenience of a bulkier desktop PC, and all without the bulk. It used to be that notebook-laptop computers were only for business people on the go. They did not have half the processing power of their larger cousins, and the battery life was not worth the battery in them. The old portable computing devices were really nothing more than mobile keyboards and document editing software, barely able to play solitaire, and you could forget about quality graphics.

All that is changed now. Notebook-laptop computers come in all shapes and sizes, and while you can still find them on the market for outrageously high prices, you can also easily find models for sale at prices equal to or even sometimes lower than those of desktops of similar quality. You can find models specialized for many different kinds of use, from working on text documents to playing games to watching movies on long trips and even doing high end graphic design. Notebook-laptop computers have been optimized for portability without sacrificing too much power through the use of special, high efficiency processors and ultra small components.

Modern notebook-laptop computers fit comfortably into a standard briefcase or backpack, with sizes from ten inch netbooks to widescreen models which are ideal for graphic design work or watching movies. The smallest of the newer notebook computers can weigh as little as two pounds - some of these models are incredibly streamlined as well, being less than an inch thick! These ultra streamlined models are of course the high end of the market, but it's easy to find notebook-laptop computers which fall into the middle, offering a manageable size and weight and high performance at low prices. With the technology used in portable computers becoming increasingly sophisticated and the competition ever fiercer, prices will continue to drop.

The biggest complaint people have historically had about notebook-laptop computers has been battery life. This is something which was genuinely the case until recently, with improvements in battery technology and efficient use of power giving the newer generations of laptop computers greatly improved batter life. Many new notebook-laptop computers can run between five and eight hours on a single charge - something unthinkable only a few years ago! These new batteries allow users to work on their computers all day and simply recharge at night - with no more scurrying to find an open outlet.

Notebook-laptop computers use much less power than do desktop computers. Upgrading to a notebook-laptop computer instead of a desktop will save you a lot of money on your energy bills.

Modern notebook-laptop computers run more quietly than a desktop as well and have made great improvements in heat management, largely due to new generation low power processors. No longer will your laptop overheat and suddenly shut down on warm days; and they can achieve this performance with small, efficient fans or even no fans at all.

All in all, there is no reason not to have a notebook-laptop computer. They are affordable, portable, efficient, and with more and more wireless hot spots popping up around the world, they can help you stay connected while you are on the go. Why even bother with a desktop anymore?

Avoid A Data Disaster On The Road: 5 Tips

by Adrian Alexa

Information is what powers business trips. It's one of your most precious assets and you should take every step to keep it safe.

Take it from someone who has left his office without synchronsing his laptop and PC, who has wiped out days worth of work because he neglected to install a backup system and who even has lost clients because he ignored the importance of good, reliable information.

Don't make the same mistakes I have. Here's what a career on the road has taught me about computer data:

5 Tips for Travels Start every trip with a synch

Making sure your PDA and PC are both up-to-date is pretty easy. Generally, you just slip the handheld into its cradle and the computer does the rest. Synchronising one PC with another isn't as straightforward. I've tested every conceivable tool, including the one that came with my computer operating system, and they can be tricky. But it's definitely worth learning, because once you leave the office, I guarantee you'll be glad you updated your laptop.

Don't trust your computer

Memory sticks that plug into your laptop are essential to the integrity of your data. And with some units now carrying up to 5 gigabytes of data (which equates to an awful lot of documents), you can fit all your essential files onto one small stick. Andrew Steele, a media consultant to charities and non-profits in Great Britain, routinely does a double backup. It recently saved his trip. "I had a laptop power supply fail," Steele recalls. "So even when the battery was finally exhausted, I could carry on without embarrassment on borrowed computers."

Stay in touch with the office

There are several useful applications that let you connect to your computer or network from afar, including Microsoft's own Remote Desktop Connection. I like these options because you can catch up on any information that you may have forgotten to synch up before you left. My biggest gripe with these programs is that they tend to be slow " particularly with a dial-up connection " making large data downloads impractical. But if you couldn't synch up before your trip, they can be a real lifesaver.

Collect information " and back it up

Normally, small business travelers are good at collecting business cards, sales leads and receipts. But this valuable information doesn't always make it back to the office. My record keeping was so inadequate when I started traveling on business that I missed numerous charge-card payments. I ended up losing money because I couldn't get reimbursed.

When in doubt, switch to paper

This is obvious advice, but it's so obvious that we sometimes forget it's an option. We've become so dependent on our technology that we don't remember that we could just write the information down. My partner used to make fun of me when I printed out the names and addresses of people before leaving on a business trip. Why do that when everything was on the computer? Well, there are still some things paper can do that a PC can't. Like operate without batteries. So when my laptop ran out of juice and I switched to paper, I didn't look like a fool.
